Tiger iron is three materials banded together — tiger's eye, red jasper and hematite — laid down in alternating layers. The tiger's eye bands carry a chatoyant shimmer, the jasper bands are flat red, and the hematite reads metallic grey, so a single carved surface holds three different lustres.

Carving a skull leaves nowhere to hide — the proportions are familiar enough that any error reads immediately. Most of the working time goes into the orbits and the line of the jaw.
