7.3" Blue Chalcedony Hand Carved Geode Skull

A geode skull worked in blue chalcedony. At 7.3 inches and 3243 g it wants a shelf of its own rather than a desk corner.

This is cryptocrystalline quartz — the crystals are there but far too small to see, which gives blue chalcedony its soft, slightly greasy sheen and its translucency. Held up to a lamp the pale blue-grey lets light through at the edges while the thicker passages stay opaque.

Carving a skull around an open crystal pocket means the void decides the composition — the carver works toward the cavity and lets it fall where the stone allows, rather than placing it.
