Red jasper is opaque microcrystalline quartz stained throughout by iron oxide. Nothing passes through it, which makes it one of the more forgiving stones to carve detail into — the eye reads the modelling of the surface instead of looking past it.

The difficulty in an animal figure is mass rather than detail: getting the shoulder, haunch and neck to carry weight convincingly while staying within the block the carver started from.
