Natural Blue Chalcedony Hand Carved Crystal Heart

A heart worked in blue chalcedony. At 15 inches and 4 g it wants a shelf of its own rather than a desk corner.

This is cryptocrystalline quartz — the crystals are there but far too small to see, which gives blue chalcedony its soft, slightly greasy sheen and its translucency. Held up to a lamp the pale blue-grey lets light through at the edges while the thicker passages stay opaque.

A carved heart lives or dies on symmetry and on the cleanness of the cleft. There is no detail to distract the eye, so the stone's own pattern does all the work.
