6.5" Blue Chalcedony Hand Carved Crystal Ashtray Fruit Tray

An ashtray fruit tray worked in blue chalcedony. At 6.5 inches and 1002 g it wants a shelf of its own rather than a desk corner.

This is cryptocrystalline quartz — the crystals are there but far too small to see, which gives blue chalcedony its soft, slightly greasy sheen and its translucency. Held up to a lamp the pale blue-grey lets light through at the edges while the thicker passages stay opaque.

Worked in the round from a single block, with the form chosen to suit what that block could give rather than imposed on it.
