A druse agate angel wings worked in amethyst. At 6.3 inches and 1173 g it wants a shelf of its own rather than a desk corner.
Amethyst is quartz that took its purple from traces of iron and natural irradiation deep underground. The colour almost always arrives in zones rather than evenly, so a carving cut across those zones shows bands of deep violet running into near-clear quartz.
Figure work asks for restraint — the face carries the whole piece, and overworking it is easier than underworking it. Drapery and hands are where the carving hours actually go.
