5.9" Black Obsidian Hand Carved Crystal Wolf

A wolf cut from a single block of black obsidian, 5.9 inches, 1918 g.

This is glass rather than stone in the crystalline sense: lava chilled so quickly that its atoms never arranged themselves. That absence of structure is what lets obsidian hold an edge sharper than surgical steel, and what gives the polished surface its depthless black.

The difficulty in an animal figure is mass rather than detail: getting the shoulder, haunch and neck to carry weight convincingly while staying within the block the carver started from.
