A butterfly wings cut from a single block of rainbow fluorite, 5.5 inches, 267 g.
Fluorite is calcium fluoride, soft at 4 on the Mohs scale and possessed of perfect cleavage in four directions — carving it is a matter of working with those planes rather than against them. The colour banding in purple, green and clear records successive stages of growth.
Animal subjects are judged on stance before detail. The weight has to sit right in the legs and shoulders, because a stone animal that looks unbalanced stays looking wrong no matter how fine the surface work is.
