A skull cut from a single block of geode agate, 3.4 inches.

An agate geode forms as silica lines the inside of a cavity, layer on layer, until the space closes or runs out. The banding you see follows the old wall of that cavity, and where the centre stayed open the carver has left the druzy crystal pocket exposed.

Carving a skull around an open crystal pocket means the void decides the composition — the carver works toward the cavity and lets it fall where the stone allows, rather than placing it.
