Quartz from the Angolan fields, usually carrying enough internal veiling and included minerals to read as smoky or milky rather than clear. Those inclusions are what give a carved surface its depth — light enters, scatters and comes back.
A dragon skull has no reference specimen to copy, so every carver answers the same questions differently: how far the brow ridge juts, whether the jaw reads reptilian or leonine, how far back the horns sweep.
