A realistic skull cut from a single block of red jasper, 3 inches.

The brick red is hematite — iron oxide — dispersed evenly enough through the quartz to make the stone completely opaque. Jasper takes a hard bright polish and shows no translucency at all, so the form reads purely as silhouette and shadow rather than through any inner glow.

The skull is the hardest test of a carver's eye, because everyone already knows what it should look like. The passages that take the longest are the ones you notice least: the transition from temple to cheekbone, and the way the teeth meet.
