This is a feldspar, which cleaves along flat internal planes rather than fracturing like quartz — carving it means reading those planes and working with them.
A tower is cut to stand, which means the base has to be true and the faces have to meet cleanly at the tip. The vertical form shows off banding that a rounded shape would break up.
