A kylin worked in red jasper. At 11.4 inches and 3975 g it wants a shelf of its own rather than a desk corner.
The brick red is hematite — iron oxide — dispersed evenly enough through the quartz to make the stone completely opaque. Jasper takes a hard bright polish and shows no translucency at all, so the form reads purely as silhouette and shadow rather than through any inner glow.
Worked in the round from a single block, with the form chosen to suit what that block could give rather than imposed on it.
