The glitter is aventurescence — flat inclusions of mica suspended through the quartzite, catching light at their own angle rather than the surface's. Move the piece and the sparkle travels across it, which is an effect no polish can imitate.
Animal subjects are judged on stance before detail. The weight has to sit right in the legs and shoulders, because a stone animal that looks unbalanced stays looking wrong no matter how fine the surface work is.
