A vase with lid worked in rainbow fluorite. At 7 inches and 2396 g it wants a shelf of its own rather than a desk corner.
Fluorite is calcium fluoride, soft at 4 on the Mohs scale and possessed of perfect cleavage in four directions — carving it is a matter of working with those planes rather than against them. The colour banding in purple, green and clear records successive stages of growth.
Hollowing stone is slower and riskier than shaping it — the wall has to stay even, and any flaw the block was hiding will find the thinnest point.
