Sodalite is a deep blue feldspathoid, threaded with white calcite that entered along fractures as the rock formed. The blue runs through the body of the stone rather than sitting on it, so a chip would show the same tone underneath.
A carved heart lives or dies on symmetry and on the cleanness of the cleft. There is no detail to distract the eye, so the stone's own pattern does all the work.
