The green body is epidote and the red flecks are piemontite, two minerals grown together in the same rock. The name comes from that contrast rather than from any single mineral, and the proportion of red to green varies from block to block.
Animal subjects are judged on stance before detail. The weight has to sit right in the legs and shoulders, because a stone animal that looks unbalanced stays looking wrong no matter how fine the surface work is.
